*[Yak shaving]* refers to the situation where you're working on a task, but you stop to start another task with the justification that it will “make the original job easier.” This can lead to starting yet another task to accomplish the second one, creating a cascade of work. While the term often carries a negative connotation—implying that one gets endlessly sidetracked and never completes the original task—yak shaving is not necessarily a bad thing.

The speaker, Minhee Hong, is an avid supporter of the fediverse, a decentralized social network. To fix personal inconveniences they encountered while using the fediverse, they started a chain reaction of creating several open source projects two years ago, including [Hollo], [Fedify], [LogTape], [Hackers' Pub], [Upyo], [Optique], and [BotKit]. What began as an attempt to solve a very minor inconvenience gradually resulted in the creation of various byproducts.

In this talk, the speaker reflects on the past two years to discuss the yak shaving spirit that became the driving force for numerous new open source projects, and will make the case that this approach can work for others as well.

There are countless open-source AI models in the world, but the hardware that actually performs their computations is mostly proprietary. As a result, many AI engineers understand how models work, but cannot directly see how the actual computations are carried out on hardware. In this session, I will introduce Tenstorrent’s CPUs and AI accelerators - whose entire process from hardware design to software is open-sourced - and share insights I gained during their development.

This lightning talk covers some lessons I've learned of contributing to and maintaining open-source projects for the past 20 years. Contributor onboarding is often quite painful, but some projects do a much better job than others. Listeners will hear practical improvements that every maintainer can adopt, and will help new projects launch with the right framework to build a vibrant community.

Onboarding contributors can be a difficult part of the open-source project lifecycle. Just like expanding your team at work, there is a lot that con go wrong if there is a mismatch in expectations.

This talk covers a mix of concrete and high level things that maintainers can do to improve their onboarding process, and things to avoid. It draws an my 20 years of contributing to open-source projects, onboarding dozens of contributors to projects I maintain, and mentoring for Google Summer of Code. And for new projects, I'll present some things to consider before starting that will improve your chance of success in building a vibrant community.

What can you do if a post you uploaded to social media suddenly isn't visible or gets deleted?
If a web service you're using suddenly shuts down, how can you protect the creative work you've accumulated over years?
Is there no way to own and control the recommendation algorithm, which is a double-edged sword?

Attempts at decentralized social media already exist, but AT-Protocol proposes a slightly different direction with a new approach to data ownership and service diversity.

The reason people are flocking to Bluesky after leaving X (formerly Twitter) or Facebook,
and why tangled.org is emerging as an effective alternative to GitHub as a hub for developers,
stems directly from the characteristics of the AT-Protocol.

In this session, we will discuss the following three topics:

1. **How AT-Protocol works** - Learn how to navigate in the ATmosphere with AT-URI
2. **How Bluesky works** - An introduction to Bluesky, a representative service based on AT-Protocol, and how it differs from other social media platforms.
3. **The present and future of ATmosphere** - An introduction to other services within the AT-Protocol ecosystem, ATmosphere, and emerging new ideas.

Most of us use a smartphone or in-vehicle navigation system on a daily basis to get directions and estimate our travel time. Geolocation is powered by GPS and other open standards, which are available for anyone to use for free. Map data is open thanks to projects like OpenStreetMap. And open-source routing engines like Valhalla generate high quality routes.

But the process of guiding the user to their destination, step by step, on any device, has long remained the realm of proprietary, vendor-locked software. This talk is about my journey building a credible open-source alternative, why we're building it in Rust, and the successes (and failures!) of running a community project with corporate involvement.

Two and a half years ago, I had a problem. My company, Stadia Maps, offered routing via an API, but the year was 2023, not 2003, and people expect to get real-time guidance through their route rather than look at a static map with lines and written directions.

Most of our users didn't have a large budget to hire a team (or two!) of mobile engineers to build the navigation experience from the ground up. But they all wanted many of the same features: a map, a line showing where you need to go, some indication of where you are, and prompts when you need to do something. Every app adds their own "special" features, but the common base is surprisingly large. And there was no SDK or even set of common components to build on!

No such open-source SDK existed. There were a smattering of vendor-locked and semi-locked SDKs, but none of them were customizable enough to support unique use cases, like golf carts or public bus drivers. Open-source wasn't just "nice to have." It was a requirement for many of our users!

That's when I decided to build Ferrostar, a next-generation navigation SDK. Building something that even our competitors could use was just the first controversial decision. The next (at the time) was the technical architecture. We decided to build all of the core decision logic in Rust, and share it among native frontends written in Swift, Kotlin, or whatever other language made the most sense for the platform.

This talk will cover the process that led to our decisions, the technical architecture we arrived at, and how it's working so far. We'll cover how we build shared libraries, where we draw API boundaries, how we test, and even how we enable extensions in native code (Swift, Kotlin, Java, etc.). You do not need to be a Rust developer to benefit from this talk. (In fact, none of the other core contributors had written a line of Rust before joining the project!). We'll cover all layers from Rust all the way up to Swift, Kotlin, and even JavaScript.

Choosing to do a project like this that's both open-source and sponsored by corporate developers has interesting tradeoffs too! Nearly every contributor working on Ferrostar has been able to do so on work time, and gets paid one way or another. So we'll also discuss how we've managed the collaboration across stakeholders over the project: both what has worked well, and the areas for improvement. We hope this will start a valuable discussion among other open-source projects. With many companies abandoning open-source in favor of more restrictive "source available" licenses, we are at a critical juncture for open-source, and we hope we can add to the conversation by highlighting ways to FOSS truly work for everyone involved.

Debian is an operating system. When based on the GNU/Linux kernel, it is known as a Linux distribution; when based on the GNU/Hurd kernel, it is a Hurd distribution.

At the same time, Debian is also a community—a collective of volunteers including developers, maintainers, and contributors. In practice, Debian relies on contributions far beyond traditional software development. Areas such as documentation, localisation (translation), the wiki, publicity, and infrastructure maintenance (e.g. server administration) are all essential parts of the project. To recognise this diversity, Debian introduced the concept of "Non-uploading Developers"—contributors whose work does not involve uploading packages but is still officially recorded and acknowledged by Debian.

However, during DebConf24 held last year in South Korea, a form of contribution risked being overlooked. Online contributions are relatively easy to track and record, while on-site contributions—such as hosting and organising a two-week conference—can easily go unrecorded if no proper system exists. Short-term volunteer activities during the event were documented, but long-term, intensive on-site efforts in planning and execution were often omitted and forgotten.

This presentation explores Debian’s contribution culture, focusing on such on-site non-uploading contributions and the challenges of recognising them within the project’s current framework.

Having Ubuntu Official support for RISC-V mass-produced consumer electronic devices like laptop instead of development board is a major step for RISC-V to succeed as an open standard and open source project inline with Canonical open source strategy.
This talk about how DeepComputing works together with partner so closely and strategically breaks the chicken-and-egg cyclic issues, and to achieve Ubuntu Desktop 24.04 running on DeepComputing produced ROMA series laptop and pads.
Overcoming all the complex barriers require all the partners collaborating in very efficient way, DeepComputing plays an important role not just mass-producing the RISC-V powered devices but facilitates all the suggested solutions and plan across all SoC partners, Product solution partners with heavy involvement from Ubuntu Silicon Team.

The Linux kernel is one of the largest and most active open-source projects, but its massive codebase and unique development culture create a high barrier to entry for newcomers. While many guides focus on the technical methodology of sending the first patch (like using git send-email), beginners often feel lost about how to build expertise and contribute sustainably afterward.

I propose to present a beginner's contribution guide focused on the Linux kernel security domain within the Operating Systems and Distributions track. This talk will be based on existing materials (e.g., LKCamp tutorials and DebConf etherpad notes) but will be enhanced with practical tips from my own experience in kernel security activities, reframing the discussion using the security subsystem as a case study for analysis and participation. The format will be a Lightning Talk covering how to overcome beginner hurdles, analysis methods, and engagement strategies, emphasizing the use of the staging tree and security-related TODO lists.

---

This presentation targets beginners who want to contribute to the Linux kernel but don't know where to start, or those who are wondering about their next steps after their first contribution.

This session guides those new to Linux kernel development through the introductory process. It provides step-by-step explanations, from building foundational knowledge (C language, OS concepts, Git) and setting up the environment (email client, using the `checkpatch.pl` script), to analyzing unfamiliar subsystems (researching security papers/conference materials, tracking Git history), and making initial contributions (bug reports, code reviews, patch submissions). Drawing from my own experience starting with curiosity in the security domain, I will share tips on building expertise and emphasize practical strategies like monitoring mailing lists and leveraging conference materials (e.g., Linux Plumbers Conference). The content is designed to minimize the confusion beginners face and encourage an enjoyable journey.

**Part 1: The Hurdles Beginners Face (What Stops Us?)**
* **High Barrier to Entry:** The need for extensive background knowledge (OS, computer architecture) and the importance of patience.
* **Getting Used to the Kernel Environment:** Understanding fundamental kernel behaviors like execution context and synchronization mechanisms.
* **The First "Real" Contribution:**
    * Quick review of the development process documentation (Documentation/process).
    * Summary of technical procedures: using `checkpatch.pl`, `get_maintainer.pl`, and setting up `git send-email`.
    * The meaning and limitations of contributions like coding style fixes or working in `drivers/staging`.
* **"Now What?":** The inevitable wandering after the first contribution. Shifting the perspective from "What *should* I do?" to "What do I *want* to do?"

**Part 2: How to Analyze an Unfamiliar Subsystem (Without Starting from Scratch)**
* **Design Before Code:** Understanding the subsystem's purpose and the big picture first.
* **Efficient Research:** How to use kernel documentation, related academic papers, conference presentations (LPC, LSFMM), and technical blogs.
* **The Latest Code is Too Complex:** Strategies for reducing complexity during analysis.
* **The Power of History Tracking:** Starting with the simpler, initial versions of the code and following the git history and mailing list archives (lore.kernel.org) to understand the context of changes.

**Part 3: Contributing to Kernel Development is Not Just About Coding**
* **Diverse Roles in the Community:** Understanding different contribution methods (maintainer, reviewer, developer, bug reporter) and strategic positioning.
* **Benefits of Starting as a Reviewer:**
    * Learning the latest technical trends by reading others' code.
    * Code reviewers are always in short supply: A way to gain expertise while naturally contributing to the community.
* **Tracking Trends:** The importance of monitoring mailing lists, tips for using email clients efficiently (e.g., mutt), and leveraging news sites like LWN.net.

**Conclusion:**
* Enjoy the journey of kernel contribution.

Have you used Open WebUI before? It brings the power to connect to many LLMs through OpenAI's inference API.

However, there are LLMs not compatible with OpenAI's inference API. How would you deal with them?

Fortunately, there is an alternative, called **OpenChat Playground**. Regardless of your LLMs that are commercial or not, or OpenAI compatible or not, it can virtually connect any LLM.

Throughout this session, 1) I'd like to introduce the OpenChat Playground project, and 2) discuss how it's possible to connect to virtually any LLM, and 3) how it can bring benefits to the open-source community.

Struggling with disjointed workflows, version control issues, and the limitations of your current document editors? This speech is your comprehensive guide to a more integrated and efficient solution. We will introduce you to ONLYOFFICE Docs, a powerful, open-source office suite built for seamless and secure collaboration from the ground up.

We will introduce each of ONLYOFFICE editors, showcasing their unique capabilities.

• Document Editor: Go beyond basic word processing. We'll explore advanced formatting, review tools with track changes and comment threads, and the ability to work with complex legal-style documents. Create, edit, and collaborate on DOCX, ODT, and PDF files with unparalleled fidelity.
• Spreadsheet Editor: Tackle complex data analysis without compromise. Discover a full set of functions, pivot tables, charts, and data validation tools. We'll demonstrate real-time co-editing on financial models and see how multiple users can work on different parts of a spreadsheet simultaneously.
• Presentation Editor: Design and deliver impactful presentations together. This editor supports animations, transitions, and speaker notes, allowing teams to collaboratively build and refine their slide decks in PPTX and ODP formats, ensuring a unified visual identity.
• PDF Editor: While primarily an editing suite, we'll also highlight its robust PDF capabilities. View and edit PDFs natively and, uniquely, fill out PDF forms directly within the browser, eliminating the need for printing and scanning.

Beyond the features, we will detail the key advantages that make ONLYOFFICE Docs stand out.
